Welcome to the University of Adelaide Library’s collection of Web books. The collection includes classic works of Literature, Philosophy, Science, and History. Please see Frequently asked questions for more details.
Our web books are listed alphabetically by author and by title, and chronologically, by author's date of birth. Some works are also listed by theme (subject). All of the works in the collection may also be found by searching the Library Catalogue.
What’s New?
[Wednesday February 20 2008] Upgrade Project: Our works are gradually being updated to reflect our current standards, including revamped and improved style sheets, and a "license". While the works are, to the best of our knowledge, in the public domain in Australia (copyright laws vary around the world, so check your local laws), the license is intended to forestall queries about the use of these works. We use a Creative Commons license, which permits non-commercial use without permission.
The new style sheets provide a cleaner look, and also provide for better pagination should you require a print version.
With over 1200 works so far, this upgrade is expected to take some time, so if there's a specific work you'd like to see upgaded soonest, please email a request.
[Friday April 6 2007] Latest release: Consolation of Philosophy, by Boethius.
[Tuesday February 27 2007] Latest release: The Anatomy of Melancholy, by Robert Burton.
[Friday January 27 2006] We are very pleased to announce that we have now published our 1,000th web book, David Hume’s Enquiry into the principles of morals, first published in 1751. Hume regarded this as the best of all his philosophical works, both in its philosophical ideas and in its literary style.
