Be not thou envious against evil men,
neither desire to be with them.
For their heart studieth destruction, and
their lips talk of mischief.
Through wisdom is an house builded; and by
understanding it is established:
And by knowledge shall the chambers be
filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
A wise man is strong; yea, a man of
knowledge increaseth strength.
For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war:
and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth
not his mouth in the gate.
He that deviseth to do evil shall be called
a mischievous person.
The thought of foolishness is sin: and the
scorner is an abomination to men.
If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy
strength is small.
If thou forbear to deliver them that are
drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain;
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not;
doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that
keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to
every man according to his works?
My son, eat thou honey, because it is good;
and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:
So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto
thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward,
and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the
dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place:
For a just man falleth seven times, and
riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.
Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and
let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:
Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him,
and he turn away his wrath from him.
Fret not thyself because of evil men,
neither be thou envious at the wicked:
For there shall be no reward to the evil
man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.
My son, fear thou the LORD and the king:
and meddle not with them that are given to change:
For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and
who knoweth the ruin of them both?
These things also belong to the wise. It is
not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
He that saith unto the wicked, Thou are
righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor
him:
But to them that rebuke him shall be
delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.
Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a
right answer.
Prepare thy work without, and make it fit
for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.
Be not a witness against thy neighbour
without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.
Say not, I will do so to him as he hath
done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.
I went by the field of the slothful, and by
the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns,
and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall
thereof was broken down.
Then I saw, and considered it well: I
looked upon it, and received instruction.
Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a
little folding of the hands to sleep:
So shall thy poverty come as one that
travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
These are also proverbs of Solomon, which
the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing:
but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
The heaven for height, and the earth for
depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
Take away the dross from the silver, and
there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
Take away the wicked from before the king,
and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
Put not forth thyself in the presence of the
king, and stand not in the place of great men:
For better it is that it be said unto thee,
Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the
presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.
Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou
know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put
thee to shame.
Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself;
and discover not a secret to another:
Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame,
and thine infamy turn not away.
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold
in pictures of silver.
As an earring of gold, and an ornament of
fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest,
so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth
the soul of his masters.
Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is
like clouds and wind without rain.
By long forbearing is a prince persuaded,
and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is
sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit
it.
Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's
house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.
A man that beareth false witness against
his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of
trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
As he that taketh away a garment in cold
weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to
an heavy heart.
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to
eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his
head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
The north wind driveth away rain: so doth
an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
It is better to dwell in the corner of the
housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is
good news from a far country.
A righteous man falling down before the
wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.
It is not good to eat much honey: so for
men to search their own glory is not glory.
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is
like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou
knowest not what a day may bring forth.
Let another man praise thee, and not thine
own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but
a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.
Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but
who is able to stand before envy?
Open rebuke is better than secret love.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the
kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to
the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so
is a man that wandereth from his place.
Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so
doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
Thine own friend, and thy father's friend,
forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy
calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far
off.
My son, be wise, and make my heart glad,
that I may answer him that reproacheth me.
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and
hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
Take his garment that is surety for a
stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
He that blesseth his friend with a loud
voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to
him.
A continual dropping in a very rainy day
and a contentious woman are alike.
Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and
the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth
the countenance of his friend.
Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the
fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be
honoured.
As in water face answereth to face, so the
heart of man to man.
Hell and destruction are never full; so the
eyes of man are never satisfied.
As the fining pot for silver, and the
furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.
Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a
mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness
depart from him.
Be thou diligent to know the state of thy
flocks, and look well to thy herds.
For riches are not for ever: and doth the
crown endure to every generation?
The hay appeareth, and the tender grass
sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.
The lambs are for thy clothing, and the
goats are the price of the field.
And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for
thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance
for thy maidens.
The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the
prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and
Ucal,
Surely I am more brutish than any man, and
have not the understanding of a man.
I neither learned wisdom, nor have the
knowledge of the holy.
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or
descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound
the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the
earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst
tell?
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield
unto them that put their trust in him.
Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove
thee, and thou be found a liar.
Two things have I required of thee; deny me
them not before I die:
Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me
neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for
me:
Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who
is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my
God in vain.
Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest
he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.
There is a generation that curseth their
father, and doth not bless their mother.
There is a generation that are pure in
their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.
There is a generation, O how lofty are
their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.
There is a generation, whose teeth are as
swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off
the earth, and the needy from among men.
The horseleach hath two daughters, crying,
Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea,
four things say not, It is enough:
The grave; and the barren womb; the earth
that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is
enough.
The eye that mocketh at his father, and
despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick
it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
There be three things which are too
wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:
The way of an eagle in the air; the way of
a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea;
and the way of a man with a maid.
Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she
eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no
wickedness.
For three things the earth is disquieted,
and for four which it cannot bear:
For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool
when he is filled with meat;
For an odious woman when she is married;
and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.
There be four things which are little upon
the earth, but they are exceeding wise:
The ants are a people not strong, yet they
prepare their meat in the summer;
The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make
they their houses in the rocks;
The locusts have no king, yet go they forth
all of them by bands;
The spider taketh hold with her hands, and
is in kings' palaces.
There be three things which go well, yea,
four are comely in going:
A lion which is strongest among beasts, and
turneth not away for any;
A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king,
against whom there is no rising up.
If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up
thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy
mouth.
Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth
butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the
forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
